What is Express Entry

Express Entry is Canada's points-based immigration management system. It does not directly grant permanent residency — it manages a pool of candidates who have submitted profiles, ranks them by CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) score, and periodically invites the highest-scoring candidates to apply for permanent residence.

The three programs under Express Entry

Federal Skilled Worker (FSW): For professionals with at least one year of skilled work experience outside Canada. Most Nigerian applicants use this stream.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC): For people who already have Canadian work experience. Applies if you have worked in Canada on a work permit.

Federal Skilled Trades (FST): For qualified tradespeople (electricians, plumbers, welders). Less commonly used by Nigerians but worth checking if you work in a skilled trade.

How the CRS score works

Your CRS score is calculated from:

• Core human capital factors (up to 500 points): Age, education, official language proficiency, Canadian work experience
• Spouse factors (up to 40 points): If applicable
• Skill transferability (up to 100 points): Combinations of education + language + work experience
• Additional points (up to 600 points): Provincial nomination (+600), valid job offer (+50–200), Canadian study experience (+15–30), French language skills (+15–30), sibling in Canada (+15)

What score do you need? Recent draws have had cutoffs between 480–540 for all-programs draws. Category-based draws (healthcare, STEM, French speakers, trade occupations) often have lower cutoffs — sometimes below 440.

How to improve your CRS score

Take the IELTS. Moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 in all four skills (listening, reading, writing, speaking) can add 30–50 points. This is the highest-ROI score improvement available.

Get your credentials assessed. An ECA from WES (World Education Services) is mandatory. A Canadian-equivalent degree assessment can add points.

Get a provincial nomination. A successful PNP (Provincial Nominee Program) nomination adds 600 points to your CRS — virtually guaranteeing an Invitation to Apply. Many provinces have streams targeting Nigerians in healthcare, tech, and skilled trades.

Consider a job offer. A valid job offer from a Canadian employer adds 50 points (for NOC TEER 3–5) or 200 points (for NOC TEER 0–2). Our team can advise on job search strategies in parallel with your Express Entry profile.

Documents you will need

• IELTS or CELPIP results (Academic or General, CLB 7 minimum)
• Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from WES or another designated organisation
• Work experience reference letters (on company letterhead, signed by supervisor)
• Police clearance certificate
• Medical examination by a designated panel physician
• Proof of funds (CAD 13,757 for a single applicant — increases with dependants)

Timeline

From profile submission to Invitation to Apply: typically 6–18 months depending on your CRS score and available draws. From ITA to landing in Canada: typically 6 months.
